Is your website more than one page? A few years back, actually probably about 10 years ago now (ekkk!), one pager or parralex designs were all the rage. But now it’s a no-no in web design.
For one, the keywords for Google – it’s a good idea to have one designated keyword per page. For example, if you offer 2 or 3 services, then each one should have its own page and keyword. Similarly, if you sell products – each one needs its own page and keyword.
For example, let’s look at one of our client’s websites, so I can show you what I mean.
A local plumber has 3 main services – plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying. Instead of having all of those on a “SERVICES” page, combining them all – we have split them into 3 separate pages. The benefit of this is that we can have specialised content for each service, as well as more focused and targeted keywords on those pages. One of the things Google likes is to have purpose to each page (eg talk about one subject per page).
By splitting out these 3 words, our client is now on the first page of Google for all of those keywords, which link to different pages on his website.
His keyword “drains kapiti” comes up 1st in Google, but not for the homepage – it brings up the Drainage service page – this wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t have a separate page for the Drainage stuff.
His Keywords “Kapiti plumber”, “Plumber Paraparaumu” and “Plumber Waikanae” bring up his homepage and the plumbing services pages.
His keywords “gas fitters kapiti” comes up 1st in Google for his Gas services page.
You get the point – split out your pages, use more keywords and reach a wider audience.
So you can see how that can bring more people to your website – as it makes it easier to FIND your website. But how does this convert more people from visitors to customers on your website? It all comes down to usability! If people can find what they are looking for on your website, they are more likely to buy.
To get more business, you need to both:
- Get more people to your website
- Convert more of those people to customers
And having a website that is more than one page can help with this.
